Science and Civilisation in China is recognised as one of the most remarkable works of scholarship in the twentieth century. Originally proposed as a single volume of 600 to 800 pages, the project now encompasses seventeen books published under the direct supervision of Joseph Needham, from the first volume which appeared in 1954, through to volume 6.3 which was in press at the time of his death in 1995. The published volumes reflect Needham’s vision of the field of the history of science and its social background in China, and his aim to make Chinese achievements in science and technology better understood. The planning and preparation of further volumes is ongoing. Responsibility for the commissioning and approval of work for publication in the series is now taken by the Publications Board of the Needham Research Institute, under the chairmanship of Dr C. Cullen, who acts as general editor of the series.

sure! you try to …
sure! you try to culture that right now..
That is culture… …
That is culture…
Obviously not technology…
Technology can be only made by building up the minimn active theories…
Also, if Columbus …
Also, if Columbus had wanted to go South East to Asia, he would have hugged the coast of Africa and gone around the cape of good hope…
He intended to go west : ).
I never said …
I never said anything about Columbus, but I have to admit… You are slightly misinformed.
Columbus first sought funding for a westward passage from the Portuguese. They Ignored him because they already had a route around Africa and because they knew Columbus’s predictions were wrong. Having known the circumference of the earth for some time, they knew that Asia was much farther west than the 2000-3000 miles that Columbus predicted.
Columbus was slightly delusional.
Columbus keep …
Columbus keep believing that it is India until at the end of his death did he realize that it is not india but instead a New World.
and Columbus goal …
and Columbus goal was to try to find another rout to India but instead end up in America because of the direction the wind blew at the equator that went towards west instead of south east. When Columbus end up in America he actually thought that it was India, thats why we call Native Americans Indians because they thought their at india and that name is stuck to this day.
No i dont believe …
No i dont believe getting drunk 24/7 but getting drunk is a reason why europe didnt quite take off. The tea gave European another source of addictiveness, and soon it took over and tea became very popular and because of that the Europeans started to have the extra energy and time to start doing productive stuff. Coffee is another one too but that is introduce later. One reason European became very interested in sea travel and stuff is because of all the vast wealth that could be gain.
While the potato …
While the potato increased population density in many European countries, you forget that it wasn’t grown on a large scale in Europe until around 1800. By this point, we can argue that Europe had already taken off in science, mathematics, art, and shipbuilding.
As for the statement about tea and getting drunk 24/7 without it… Do you really believe it?

Many of the ship …
Many of the ship wrecks are ships that carry goods like Porcelain, In Europe at that time Porcelain was very popular because you can drink tea from Porcelain cup. trade wasn’t just done on land but also through sea routs, China and the west had been trading long ago. Another thing is European at the time benefited a lot from tea from china, after the introduction of tea did Europeans became productive and started working, before the tea Europeans do nothing but drink all the time.
Crops played a …
Crops played a major role in Europe. The truth is if it wasn’t for the crops introduce in Europe from North America, Europe wouldn’t have a population boom and without that the industrial revolution would be so different. Potato played a huge role in Europes development and that came from America. Growth in population helped further advance the Industrial revolution, just a simple crop like Potato could make all the difference.
could you get some …
could you get some sources on the chinese ships in European waters? I can’t find any.
Some types of wheat …
Some types of wheat are pretty resilient… It also should be noted that Northern china had similar crops and climate, but managed to have high population density.
The center of knowledge for the Mediterranean, was the eastern Roman Empire, which was a power until the renaissance. This might explain why many middle eastern scholars had access to this information and Europeans were able to turn to the ancients during the renaissance for learning.
I did not intend …
I did not intend this as a debate about who was better, East or West. I merely stated that this video completely ignores Western and middle eastern examples that predate their Chinese cousins.
As for the fall of Rome, that is the result of economic collapse, a large and expensive military, and a mass migration of invading tribes into Western Europe. It cannot necessarily be explained by crops, as wheat is pretty resilient.
This is a …
This is a documentary about the chinese treasure ships, these huge ship wrecks are also being discover today in seas in North America and also in seas in Europe. archaeologist are just starting to uncover these ancient chinese ship wrecks all over the world from north america to south america to australia to europe, and these ships carbon dated before Columbus reached America

Europe is not in a …
Europe is not in a good position in the past because crops die easily. good weather one year and extremely cold weather the next. Thats why Europe kind of went on this up and down and up and down kind thingy. Not until the potato and other crops that grows well in kind of chilly climate did Europe started to pick up, and those crops came from America. And historians also starting to believe that China also helped the european explorers, because china map the world way before europe.
Yes the west does …
Yes the west does have advance technologies as well i agree with you. One reason why the west in the past started to lose this technology is because of various wars and craps thats happening in Europe at the time, and then we have the Fall of Rome etc etc and all this turmoil cause society to lose its technology and information. Many historians pointed out that because of this situation that Europe is facing it then have to replace its lost information and technology by getting it from the east

Did I ever say that …
Did I ever say that the Chenese made this video?
Also, Frnnk Shows implicit agreement with the content of the video by posting it. Complaining to him for posting it is perfectly valid.
That said, my comments were actually aimed more towards the viewers… Look at the comments below. Do you believe that it is acceptable to use misinformation to belittle an entire racial group, but not acceptable to correct that information?
NoOne3234 if you …
NoOne3234 if you want to argue then go complain to DiscoveryScience ok? its not like china made this stupid video, the west made this documentary themselves so go complain to Discovery………….
While the Chinese …
While the Chinese were very advanced, this video goes out of its way to belittle the accomplishments of the west. The bridges, for example, are used to demonstrate Chinese superiority and architecture. However, the west is not without wide spanning arches( the Romans were capable of building 43 meter wide domes by 31 BC out of concrete).
Similarly, the west had it’s own version of the chain pump by 300 bc…
i agree with u …
i agree with u brother
actually chinese …
actually chinese scholars r more noble than western scholars, at least they acknowledge the western ancient inventions and put those into books, but the western scholars r very conceited. they seldom mention the east as if the whole world is made up by them. Actually u r wrong, China is ranked #4 in world Inventing Countries. And everything is based on previous knowledge including TV and Refrigiator.
and the western …
and the western europeans ( or for that matter anyone else) didn’t do the same thing? building upon others inventions?
yeah , so we got to …
yeah , so we got to stop all the mess of today modern chinese and make our ancestor be proud for us when we praying .
