Born on a dairy farm near Toronto, Dr. Mildred Vera Peters is most notably recognized as an outstanding clinical investigator who changed the management of Hodgkin’s disease and breast cancer. In addition, her legacy as a clinician her deep desire to know and involve her patients in decision-making also marks her as a truly unique and compassionate innovator who was ahead of her time.
One cannot fully appreciate the impact of Dr. Peters work without taking into account the challenges she faced as a female in an era when women were not universally accepted as scientists. To graduate in the 1930s from medical school and emerge out of the 1960s as a world-class figure in oncology is a testament to her dogged determination and ingenuity.
Claiming that research isn’t a question of time but a matter of curiosity, Dr. Peters was a great observer who was driven by the need to explain all that she observed. In 1935, she joined the father of the discipline of radiation therapy in Canada, Dr. Gordon Richards, at Toronto General Hospital who suggested that she study Hodgkin’s disease. This led to her landmark publication in 1950 that showed that a high proportion of patients with early-stage Hodgkin’s disease considered incurable at the time could be cured if treated with high dose radiation.
From 1958 to her retirement in 1976, Dr. Peters worked at the Princess Margaret Hospital where her relentless pursuit of scientific truth with respect to treating early-stage cancer of the breast proved that breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) followed by radiation is as effective as radical mastectomy. Her findings in both Hodgkin’s disease and breast cancer, although initially met with skepticism, became common practice throughout Canada and the world.
Successfully married with two children, Dr. Peters had an extraordinary ability to balance and separate her professional and personal worlds to the point that she was known as Mrs. Lobb at home and Dr. Peters at the hospital. Women then, today and for generations to come will continue to be inspired by this remarkable role model.
Dr. Peters was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1975 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1977. She was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in 1979. Among numerous honours, Dr. Peters has been
awarded two honourary doctorates (York University, 1975; Queens University, 1983).

Born in Winnipeg, Dr. James Hoggs brilliant career and uniquely-blended background in pathology, pulmonary physiology and molecular biology has leveraged over 40 years of seminal contributions to the world’s understanding of lung disease. An outstanding researcher, teacher, lecturer and colleague, Dr. Hogg has arguably had a greater influence on the medical
community’s knowledge of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma than any other individual worldwide.
During his Ph.D. program at McGill University in the 1960s, Dr. Hogg was thoroughly trained in lung morphometry, stereology, respiratory physiology and pathophysiology. He later expanded his experimental toolkit by learning the principles of molecular biology and high resolution lung
imaging giving him an unrivaled set of skills and a remarkable ability to understand the relationship between lung structure and function.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hoggs research has remained focused on the mechanisms and anatomical sites of obstructive lung disease. His first publication in 1968 presented a revolutionary idea that the focus in COPD should not be on the large airways but rather on the
smaller ones. Numerous groundbreaking studies followed both his and those of other investigators that verified the accuracy of Dr. Hoggs original hypothesis and advanced our knowledge of how the lung works in health and disease, including the pathophysiology of asthma and the harmful effects of smoking and pollution.
In 1977, in the midst of a successful academic career at McGill, Dr. Hogg was recruited to the University of British Columbia, and particularly St. Pauls Hospital. There he built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research, which grew from 1 trainee to 120
every year and 2 principal investigators to more than 30 over the next three decades. In 2003, the laboratory was named The James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research in his honour. Dr. Hoggs impact is perhaps best attested to by his highly
sought-after lectures around the world and by his training of distinguished pulmonary scientists.
An Officer of the Order of Canada (2005), Dr. Hogg was elected to the Royal Society of Canada (1992) and has been recognized nationally with a vast array of scientific awards. In 2003, he was the recipient of the prestigious American Society for Investigative Pathology Chugai Award, which, in addition to being honoured by the American Thoracic Society on several occasions, reflects his international eminence.

They devour their own. Dr. Richard Steinberg, who holds two Ph. D.s in biology, was persecuted by bigoted Darwinists within the scientific community. As editor of “Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington”, a scientific publication associated with the Smithsonian Institute, he was forced to step down as editor, had his office at the Smithsonian taken away, had to turn in his keys, had research money withheld and was even “shunned”. Closed minded, fellow scientists refused to respond if he spoke to them and wouldn’t even greet him in hallways. Why? Because he allowed an article, approved by a panel of scientists, to be published which promoted intelligent design rather than the religion of Darwinism. He didn’t write the article. He simply allowed it to be published. If these actions had been taken by Christians against an evolutionist it would have been a front page story!
Are Atheists Hijacking Academic Freedom? Why some might consider Ben Stein’s new movie to be political dynamite. The theory of intelligent design (ID), holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause rather than an undirected process such as natural selection. ID is thus a scientific disagreement with the core claim of evolutionary theory that the apparent design of living systems is an illusion. There are folks working overtime to deny scientists who disagree with the core claim of evolutionary theory the right to pursue the scientific evidence for intelligent design theory. But there is more to this than meets the eye. English Chick Cartoon Tracts – http://www.chick.com/catalog/tractlist.asp Chick Publications P.O.
Douglas S. McGregor, Ph.D., is the director of the Semiconductor Materials and Radiological Technologies (SMART) Laboratory at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he designs, fabricates, and characterizes radiation detectors and systems. Dr. McGregor has over 15 years of experience with radiation detection and measurement, semiconductor physics, and semiconductor device fabrication, and he is recognized as an expert on semiconductor radiation detector design, fabrication, and characterization. He presently holds records for semiconductor detector results and designs, and has introduced novel concepts for neutron and gamma radiation detectors. Many neutron detectors developed at the SMART Laboratory are used and tested at the Ford Nuclear Reactor facility, where graduate students working with Dr. McGregor characterize their properties. Mr. McGregor has authored or co-authored over 36 research publications on radiation detectors, and presently has six patents filed on various detector concepts. He has a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan. Dr. McGregor has also performed research for the Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories.

Find out how scientists managed to safely free the fragile fossils from the sediment surrounding them.

Following publication in the journal Science on the discovery and study of a 4.4 million-year-old female partial skeleton nicknamed “Ardi,” Discovery Channel will present a world premiere special, DISCOVERING ARDI, Sunday October 11 at 9 PM (ET/PT) documenting the sustained, intensive investigation leading up to this landmark publication of the Ardipithecus ramidus fossils.

UNDERSTANDING ARDI, a one-hour special produced in collaboration with CBS News will air at 11 PM (ET/PT) immediately following DISCOVERING ARDI. The special is moderated by former CBS and CNN anchor Paula Zahn and includes research team members Dr. Tim White, Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie, Dr. Giday WoldeGabriel, Dr. Owen Lovejoy, and science journalist Ann Gibbons

The scientific investigation began in the Ethiopian desert 17 years ago, and now opens a new chapter on human evolution, revealing the first evolutionary steps our ancestors took after we diverged from a common ancestor we once shared with living chimpanzees. “Ardi’s” centerpiece skeleton, the other hominids she lived with, and the rocks, soils, plants and animals that made up her world were analyzed in laboratories around the world, and the scientists have now published their findings in the prestigious journal Science.

“Ardi” is now the oldest skeleton from our (hominid) branch of the primate family tree. These Ethiopian discoveries reveal an early grade of human evolution in Africa that predated the famous Australopithecus nicknamed “Lucy.” Ardipithecus was a woodland creature with a small brain, long arms, and short legs. The pelvis and feet show a primitive form of two-legged walking on the ground, but Ardipithecus was also a capable tree climber, with long fingers and big toes that allowed their feet to grasp like an ape’s. The discoveries answer old questions about how hominids became bipedal.
