This is all just great.

Who is Ida?

Ida is a 47 million year old, perfectly preserved primate recovered from the Messel Pit in Germany.

Ida is the most complete early primate fossil ever found, and scientists believe that she could be one of our earliest ancestors. She is a remarkable link between the first primates and modern humans and despite having lived 47 million years ago, her features show striking similarities to our own.

For 150 years, scientists have debated the course of our evolutionary journey from tree-dwelling primate to modern Homo sapiens.

When Darwin put forward the theory of evolution in his book “On The Origin of Species”, he suggested that there were transitional species linking humans with the rest of animal life.

Since Darwin’s time, palaeontologists have made important discoveries of fossils that have begun to uncover our prehistoric ancestry. Best known of these fossils is Lucy, a hominid who lived around 3.2 million years ago at the time when our ancestors started walking upright. But before Lucy there are massive gaps in the fossil record, and scientists have only had fragments of fossils to study.

Scientists have long hoped that the Earth might eventually yield an even more ancient fossil that links apes, man and all other primates to the earliest mammals on the planet. Now Ida is rewriting the history of our earliest origins. She is the most complete primate fossil ever found and has proto-anthropoid features, placing her at the base of the anthropoid branch which leads to monkeys, apes, and humans. Here at last, 150 years after the publication of “On The Origin of Species”, we have the link that connects us directly with the rest of the animal kingdom.

This video pries deeper into the intellectual dishonesty and mental gymnastics employed by WT ministers as they attempt to scripturally justify that the peddling of WT publications is a commandment from Jesus himself.

If Jehovahs Witnesses claim to be the only organization to have and promulgate the truth about God and His Word, the Bible, as written and recorded in WT publications, then why has the Truth been revised time and time again? Does it ever cross the brainwashed minds of Jehovahs Witnesses that the revision of truth would render their previous assertions about God and Scripture erroneous, and therefore false, i.e., a lie? This simple fact negates the idea that Jehovahs Witnesses are Gods only true ministers today.

Watch this video and decide for yourself. Are Jehovahs Witnesses really ordained ministers or Watchtower publication peddlers?

Born on a dairy farm near Toronto, Dr. Mildred Vera Peters is most notably recognized as an outstanding clinical investigator who changed the management of Hodgkin’s disease and breast cancer. In addition, her legacy as a clinician her deep desire to know and involve her patients in decision-making also marks her as a truly unique and compassionate innovator who was ahead of her time.
One cannot fully appreciate the impact of Dr. Peters work without taking into account the challenges she faced as a female in an era when women were not universally accepted as scientists. To graduate in the 1930s from medical school and emerge out of the 1960s as a world-class figure in oncology is a testament to her dogged determination and ingenuity.
Claiming that research isn’t a question of time but a matter of curiosity, Dr. Peters was a great observer who was driven by the need to explain all that she observed. In 1935, she joined the father of the discipline of radiation therapy in Canada, Dr. Gordon Richards, at Toronto General Hospital who suggested that she study Hodgkin’s disease. This led to her landmark publication in 1950 that showed that a high proportion of patients with early-stage Hodgkin’s disease considered incurable at the time could be cured if treated with high dose radiation.
From 1958 to her retirement in 1976, Dr. Peters worked at the Princess Margaret Hospital where her relentless pursuit of scientific truth with respect to treating early-stage cancer of the breast proved that breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) followed by radiation is as effective as radical mastectomy. Her findings in both Hodgkin’s disease and breast cancer, although initially met with skepticism, became common practice throughout Canada and the world.
Successfully married with two children, Dr. Peters had an extraordinary ability to balance and separate her professional and personal worlds to the point that she was known as Mrs. Lobb at home and Dr. Peters at the hospital. Women then, today and for generations to come will continue to be inspired by this remarkable role model.
Dr. Peters was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1975 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1977. She was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in 1979. Among numerous honours, Dr. Peters has been
awarded two honourary doctorates (York University, 1975; Queens University, 1983).

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com

Shy people often avoid situations that force close contact with other people. They worry that something they say or do will make others laugh at them.

But some people worry much more than others about being the target of laughter. These people are frightened. They suffer from an emotional disorder called gelotophobia. That long name comes from the Greek language. The word Gelos means laugh, while phobos means fear.

Victor Rubio is an expert on human behavior at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He says people laugh at others for many different reasons. He says being laughed at causes a fear response in the victim. That fear leads the victim to avoid social situations.

Gelotophobia limits the way they lead their lives.

Victor Rubio was among researchers in a huge international study about laughter. The researchers wanted to understand the difference between normal shyness and true gelotophobia. Another goal was to measure the fear of being laughed at within different cultures.

A team from the University of Zurich led ninety-three researchers from many countries in search of answers. The researchers surveyed more than twenty-two thousand people. They used questions provided in forty-two languages. Their findings were reported in the scientific publication Humor.

Some of the people questioned said they felt unsure of themselves in social situations. But they hid their feelings. Others said they avoided social situations where they had been laughed at before. People also admitted to differing levels of fear that they themselves were the targets of other peoples laughter.

The researchers measured and compared all these reactions. Fear of being laughed at, being made fun of, is a common emotion. But the researchers learned that these feelings differed from nation to nation. For example, the study found that people in Turkmenistan and Cambodia are likely to hide insecure feelings when they are around others’ laughter. But people in Iraq, Egypt and Jordan who feel they have been victims before may avoid such situations.

People in Finland were the least likely to believe that people laughing in their presence were making fun of them. Only eight and a half percent of Finns said they would — compared to eighty percent of those questioned in Thailand.

What would you think? You can comment at voaspecialenglish.com.

And that’s the VOA Special English Health Report.

An outstanding researcher, teacher, lecturer and colleague, Dr. Hogg has arguably had a greater influence on the medical
community’s knowledge of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma than any other individual worldwide.
During his Ph.D. program at McGill University in the 1960s, Dr. Hogg was thoroughly trained in lung morphometry, stereology, respiratory physiology and pathophysiology. He later expanded his experimental toolkit by learning the principles of molecular biology and high resolution lung
imaging giving him an unrivaled set of skills and a remarkable ability to understand the relationship between lung structure and function.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hoggs research has remained focused on the mechanisms and anatomical sites of obstructive lung disease. His first publication in 1968 presented a revolutionary idea that the focus in COPD should not be on the large airways but rather on the
smaller ones. Numerous groundbreaking studies followed both his and those of other investigators that verified the accuracy of Dr. Hoggs original hypothesis and advanced our knowledge of how the lung works in health and disease, including the pathophysiology of asthma and the harmful effects of smoking and pollution.
In 1977, in the midst of a successful academic career at McGill, Dr. Hogg was recruited to the University of British Columbia, and particularly St. Pauls Hospital. There he built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research, which grew from 1 trainee to 120
every year and 2 principal investigators to more than 30 over the next three decades. In 2003, the laboratory was named The James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research in his honour. Dr. Hoggs impact is perhaps best attested to by his highly
sought-after lectures around the world and by his training of distinguished pulmonary scientists.
An Officer of the Order of Canada (2005), Dr. Hogg was elected to the Royal Society of Canada (1992) and has been recognized nationally with a vast array of scientific awards. In 2003, he was the recipient of the prestigious American Society for Investigative Pathology Chugai Award, which, in addition to being honoured by the American Thoracic Society on several occasions, reflects his international eminence.

Scientists Discover ‘Missing Link’ In Human Evolution (Sky News, May 19, 2009)

Scientists say they have found a primate fossil that shows our connection with other mammals and our earliest human ancestor. These pictures are from the programme “The Link” by Atlantic Productions.

——————————————–

47 MILLION-YEAR-OLD FOSSIL TOUTED AS ‘MISSING LINK’

Scientists believe they have found the “missing link,” an ancient primate fossil some 47 million years old which is thought to the common ancestor to all later monkeys, apes and humans.

The nearly perfect skeleton, classified as Darwinius masillae, was found in Germany. It’s a she, about the size of a small cat, with four legs and a long tail and lived for about 9 or 10 months.

The creature, which scientists nicknamed Ida after lead researcher Jorn Hurum’s 6-year-old daughter, is not a direct ancestor of monkeys and humans, but it provides a good indication of what such an ancestor may have looked like, researchers said.

Is fossil Ida a missing link in evolution?

This 47m-year-old skeleton is one of the most significant primate fossil discoveries, hailed by some as ‘the missing link’ and by others, such as David Attenborough, as proof of evolution.

Primate Fossil Could Be Key Link in Evolution

Scientists say a 47-million-year-old fossil found in Germany may be a key link to explain the evolution of early primates, and, ultimately, modern human beings. The fossil, of a young female that probably resembled a modern-day lemur, is described as “the most complete primate fossil ever found.” It is small — with a body about the size of a raccoon — but it has characteristics found in later primates and in humans.

It has, among other things, opposable thumbs, similar to humans’ and unlike those found on other modern mammals. It has fingernails instead of claws. And by examining the structure of its hind legs (one of which is partly missing), scientists say they can see evidence of evolutionary changes that would eventually lead to primates standing upright.

——————————————–

The National Transportation Safety Board today issued its 2010 Federal Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements, adding rail, aviation and marine issues, and updating the status of other issues on the list. At the same time, the Board removed the issue areas dealing with improved protection for school bus passengers and fatigue in the pipeline industry.

“Every one of the hundreds of currently open safety recommendations address concerns that the Safety Board has uncovered in its accident investigations,” NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said. “But the recommendations on the Most Wanted list represent those improvements that can have the widest benefit.”

Besides removing two issue areas on the list, the Board reviewed the remaining 13 issue areas on the list and added two new ones. Each issue area is color coded by the NTSB to designate its action/timeliness: Red for Unacceptable Response; Yellow for Acceptable Response, Progressing Slowly; and Green for Acceptable Response, Progressing in a Timely Manner.

Improve the Safety of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Flights

•Conduct all flights with medical personnel on board in accordance with stricter commuter aircraft regulations.

•Develop and implement flight risk evaluation programs for EMS operators.

•Require formalized dispatch and flight-following procedures including up-to-date weather information.

•Install terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) on aircraft used for EMS operations.

He was the chairperson of his department from 1977 to 1980. In October 1978, because of dozens of publications in top journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, Journal of Economic Theory, Review of Economic Studies, among others, Batra was ranked third in a group of superstar economists, selected from all the American and Canadian universities by an article in the learned journal, Economic Enquiry. In 1990, the Italian prime minister awarded him a Medal of the Italian Senate for writing a book that correctly predicted the downfall of Soviet communism, fifteen years before it happened. Dr. Batra has been written up in major newspapers and magazines, such as the New YorkTimes, Washington Post, USA Today, Time, Newsweek, the U.S. News and World Report, and appeared on all major networks including CBS, NBC, CNN, ABC, CNBC, among others. Batras latest book is: The New Golden Age: The Coming Revolution against Political Corruption and Economic Chaos.
Some Comments on Ravi Batras Work.”Ravi Batra has made an outstanding reputation in the United States as an international economic theorists in the best Western tradition.” Leonard Silk, New York Times “The forecasting record of this widely respected Southern Methodist University economist has won glowing praise from many pragmatic investment masters.” Tom Peters, Chicago Tribune. “Dr. Batra writes about his subject as clearly as if he were telling bedtime stories.” Christopher Lehmann Haupt, New York Times . ” The good professor has a formidable academic reputation and, from what I know, his forecasting record is impressive.” Barton Biggs, Morgan Stanley “Batra [is] a scholar who has earned a considerable reputation as an expert on trade.” Albert Crenshaw,Washington Post”His predictions in the early 1980s of low inflation, falling oil prices and a wave of mergersmocked for yearshave proved close to the mark.” Thomas C. Hayes, New York Times”Ravi Batra was used to making tumultuous global forecasts and having nobody listenthen predictions started to come true.” Chip Brown, Associated Press
